The photo that inspired this quilt

This quilt was made for an online challenge: the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge. In November 2011 I was Hostess for this challenge, meaning that I suggested the theme or concept. The concept was "Experiments in Contrast and Color: Use strong value contrast in a dramatic way".

For inspiration I used a photo I had taken many years ago on a trip to Santa Fe. After procrastinating for several days, I made the basic quilt top in two days using Upside Down Applique. The size is approximately 13.5" x 18". After posting the unfinished top for the challenge, it took me a few weeks to get back to it. It is now quilted. I opted for less quilting than I usually do in order to preserve the smooth nature of the adobe walls.

The small photos below show the making of the quilt from sketch to completion. Click on the pictures to see a larger image.
