Description: This class introduces some of the major principles
of designing realistic landscapes using atmospheric perspective. Emphasis will be on the
effective use of color to create the illusion of depth. Participants will begin their own
small enchanting fabric "paintings" using fusible appliqué and machine
stitching. Designs for mountain or seashore landscapes will be provided, so you do not
need to know how to draw to take this class. Your finished project will be suitable for
framing or you may wish to add borders and bind your small quilt.
Skill level: All Skill Levels
Supplies:
- A piece of muslin approximately 10" x 13"
- A piece of sky fabric at least 10" x 13"
- A wide variety of fabrics suggestive of a natural landscape; sky and
water, hills, fields, and sunsets. Batiks, hand-dyes and subtle prints work well. Calicoes
or high contrast prints do not work as well. Your fabric pieces need not be larger than
10" x 13" and may include smaller scraps. Try to include a wide range of values
(light to dark) in your selection. If you plan to work on a seashore landscape, you may
need a variety of ecru to beige fabrics for sand.
- Paper and fabric scissors
- Fine line permanent marker, such as Pigma pen or ultra fine Sharpie
- A few sheets of 9" x 12" tracing paper
- Wonder Under, Heat n Bond light, Steam-a-Seam light, or
other fusible web
- An iron and ironing surface (Although ironing stations may be shared,
this is a fusing class. One ironing station per 2-3 people is a minimum
requirement)
- Decorative threads for machine stitching, in colors to match or blend
with your landscape
- Pins and basic sewing supplies
- Rotary cutting tools, optional
- Extension cord and / strip outlet
